Font Management

So I've been using Fontcase since it was first released as a beta. When it went pay I bought it because it was, as far as I could tell, the best font manager for Mac at a half the price of the competition.

And then 2.0 came out and now it's a horribly non-user-friendly app. Now I'm looking at moving house.

So what do you guys use to manage your fonts? Right now, FontExplorer X is in the lead as it seems the more popular. One feature Fontcase has that FEX doesn't is font-renaming. This is very handy when the font doesn't match the correct name and the faces all have their own families. I have a copy of Meta FF that shows up as every individual version unless I manually go in and tell it to do otherwise. I don't seem to be able to do that in FEX.

Any other recommendations?

  • Hey Doug, did you come up with an answer to this? I have just converted from Windows to Mac (YAY!) and am looking for a font manager. What are you using now?
  • I ended up sticking with Fontcase. FEX was a close second, but the ability to organize my fonts was rather key since I have mostly free fonts I've gotten from somewhere deep in the recesses of the internet. Fontcase makes renaming and organizing them a lot easer, though I don't always like the rest of the interface. It also got a big bug update that fixed a few of my bigger complaints, though not the UI.

I think we're back to, "No font management app is perfect so just pick the one that's the least crap for your own purposes."
  • Lol, thanks Doug I'll give it a whirl.
